Since 1966, Nova Electric has been a valued supplier
of American-made ruggedized AC Power Sources for
harsh environment and military applications. The
product line consists of Pure Sine
Wave DC-AC Inverters, True On-Line
UPS Systems, and Solid-State Frequency
Converters in the 120 VA to 320+ KVA single
and three phase power range. These power sources
are offered in a wide variety of standard COTS
configurations, which can also be quickly customized
per each customers unique application.
Most of Nova Electrics
R&D efforts are spent on furthering our flexible
architecture designs, which are suitable for most
demanding, harsh environment applications in their
standard form. For special applications, this
flexible architecture allows for quick adaptation
and customization, based on the specific specs
required. On this website, you will mainly see
examples of our Inverters, UPS
Systems, and Frequency Converters
in their standard COTS configurations. For a majority
of applications, the COTS products shown do not
require any modification or customization.
Nova Electric has built a formidable
reputation as a reliable supplier to the military,
industrial, and commercial marketplaces, by focusing
its efforts on constructing reliable products,
at a reasonable cost, and delivering on time.
Nova Electric participates in high profile defense
programs worldwide, for land, sea, and air applications.
Our products are specified by all branches of
the United States Armed Forces, the Israeli Navy
and Air Force, the Canadian DND, the British Navy,
the Australian Department of Defence, the Spanish
Navy, the Italian Navy, and NATO Forces, to name
a few. Nova Electric also boasts a loyal following
among the major defense contractors such as Raytheon,
Lockheed Martin, DRS Technologies, Northrop Grumman,
and Boeing. Novas COTS products, which are
offered to industrial and commercial customers,
benefit from the same quality and robust construction
as the military designs. Industrial and commercial
customers span a diverse array of fields, including
electric utility companies, mines, steel mills,
airports, telecommunication companies, and railroads.
Product Overview
Nova Electrics product
mix consists primarily of Pure Sine
Wave DC-AC Inverters, True On-Line
UPS Systems, and Solid-State Frequency
Converters. These AC Sources are normally
sold off the shelf or ruggedized against shock,
vibration, and humidity to satisfy most military
applications. In addition, most of Novas
standard products can be modified or customized
to meet specific requirements.
The Pure Sine Wave
DC-AC Inverters span the 120VA to 60+ KVA
power levels, in most standard nominal DC inputs
including 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 120, 155, 240, 600,
and 750 VDC. AC Outputs offered include any standard
single phase voltage (120 or 220 VAC) or three-phase
voltage (120/208, 220/380, or 277/480 VAC), in
50 Hz, 60 Hz, or 400 Hz versions. Our inverters
are offered in freestanding, rack-mount, and NEMA
cabinet configurations as required, though the
standard enclosures are as shown.
The True On-Line
UPS Systems are offered in 1 KVA to 320+ KVA
power levels, in any standard single phase voltage
(120 or 220 VAC) or three-phase voltage (120/208,
220/380, or 277/480 VAC), in 50 Hz, 60 Hz, or
400 Hz versions. Most of our UPS Systems can also
function as voltage / frequency converters, with
the ability to convert a given single or three
phase AC input to another single or three phase
AC output, in conjunction with the usual battery
back-up capabilities. Several of the Galaxy-Series
models also offer an Auto-Select input
function, which allows the UPS to operate automatically
on either a 120 or 220 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz input
voltage. Our UPS Systems are offered in freestanding,
rack-mount, and NEMA cabinet configurations as
required, though the standard enclosures are as
shown.
The Solid-State
Frequency
Converters are available in 120 VA to 320+
KVA power levels, and can convert any standard
single phase voltage (120 or 220 VAC) or three-phase
voltage (120/208, 220/380, or 277/480 VAC) to
another. Every model is available in 50 Hz, 60
Hz, or 400 Hz input or output. Alternative frequencies
(such as 100 Hz for special railroad applications)
are available upon request. All of these converters
boast the superior reliability, reduced maintenance
costs and noise levels, and more compact, lightweight
dimensions that can only be achieved utilizing
a modern solid-state design. These converters
are offered in freestanding, rack-mount, and NEMA
cabinet configurations as required, though the
standard enclosures are as shown.
Many of Nova Electrics
models feature sophisticated PWM technology, microprocessor
control, comprehensive display panels, and RS-232
and RS-485 communications capabilities. All can
be ruggedized against shock, vibration, and humidity
to meet MIL-STD-810. These power sources are offered
in a wide variety of standard COTS configurations,
which can also be quickly customized per each
customers unique application. However, for
a majority of applications, the COTS products
shown do not require any modification or customization.
Company Structure
Nova Electric is an autonomous
division of Technology Dynamics, Inc.
(TDI), a privately owned power supply company
specializing in the design and manufacture of
switch-mode power supplies and DC-DC converters,
and sister division to Mid-Eastern
Industries specializing in the design and
manufacture of high-precision linear power supplies.
As a whole, the company currently employs 100
professionals, of whom 30% are engineering staff.
Twelve of the on-site engineers have advanced
degrees, and the President of the company is a
regular contributor to prominent technical conferences
and journals.
TDI acquired Nova Electric in
1990 from the Hobart Brothers conglomerate, to
add its AC products to TDIs existing line
of DC power supplies. Combined, the two companies
offerings span the breadth of the specialized
power supply industry, both in AC and DC power.
Further, the two companies often collaborate technologically
to offer extremely advanced COTS and customized
supplies which have both AC and DC capability
these supplies are usually designed for
specific military applications (such as powering
weapons systems in Fast Attack submarines)
and are built to order. An example of such a
supply
is the MIL-STD-1399 certified Weapon
Power Converter. More examples can be found
on our Custom Designs Page.
